Four reasons for unemployment in South Africa and globally
Answer:
People can be unemployed for many reasons:
10 Reasons for Unemployment
- Lack of funding for education. For several years now the education budget has been cut considerably in each successive year. This means that resources for teaching are at an all time low because schools cannot afford to remain open and teachers are paid so little that they opt to either work in private schools which most people cant afford or they move overseas where teachers are appreciated.
- Unemployment rates. Because of the decline in the quality of education given to pupils people are not qualified for skilled work. This means that manual labour positions are the only ones available to them and thus they cannot contribute to the economy as much as they should.
- Weak Rand. The weaker the Rand becomes in the international market, the higher inflation gets. this makes everything so expensive that people cannot afford to invest in the economy and spend all of their money just trying to survive.
- Emigration of skilled workers. It is a fact that many of SA's skilled workers are leaving SA as quickly as they can for better opportunities overseas.
- Corrupt government. It is clear that the ANC has no clue what they are doing. the policies that they put in place are detrimental rather than helpful. And because they would rather take a cash bribe up front instead of trying to make things better in the long run we end up losing out.
- High birth rates. Because people are not well educated, birthrates have soared. This means that families in rural areas are larger than ever before and money is scare in those areas because farms are failing. Since the expropriation of many white owned farms in the 90's and early 00's agriculture has dropped to 30% of what it was during apartheid. This means that only about 2-6% of agricultural land is productive.
- Poorly run Eskom. Electricity is a scare commodity nowadays and costs a fortune. this is a direct result of poor governance by Eskom. Because Eskom failed too execute long term strategies we are now in a crisis to how to continually have a decent supply of electricity. Plus Eskom insists on piping free electricity to Zimbabwe.
- Crime rates. The high crime rates in the last 15 years have discouraged tourists from visiting SA. This means that SA has lost hundreds of millions of Rands in tourist money.
- Tax. The policy in SA is to tax the wealthy until they have nothing left or until they leave and use that money to subsidise the unemployed. This means that people are not motivated to get work because they know they will be given free housing, water and electricity. So essentially, the working population pays the taxes of 3-4 people. We pay their taxes as well as our own and subsidise them. And those are the most pressing reasons that SA has a pathetic economy at the moment.
People can be unemployed for many reasons:
- They quit their position and are looking for a new one.
- They were laid off due to lack of work and haven't yet been rehired.
- Their company reduced the work force, and they are seeking a new position. This can be due to a local condition, when the company closes a plant or division, or a national condition, when the economy slows and many companies reduce their work force.
- They have recently returned to the work force - perhaps from pregnancy or attending school - and haven't yet located a position.
- The need for their skill set has gone down, and there are limited positions available, which may lead to unemployment until they train for a new position.
- Technology has reduced the need for their type of position.
