There are a lot of factors that contribute to a detrimental relationship. Some of these are a person's low self-esteem and selfishness.
When you have a low self-esteem, you tend to be clingy to your partner. You tend to be jealous of anyone who talks to him or her. You're paranoid and you suffocate your partner making it impossible for both of you to grow and develop into better individuals.
Selfishness is also detrimental to relationship because you tend to think only of your needs and happiness. You think more about your satisfaction rather then the satisfaction of your partner.
These attitudes contribute to a relationship that is not good for both of you.
