Democracy is a system of government wherein the people are given the power to either rule directly or vote for a representative who will rule in their behalf.

1. Citizen Participation - it is a vital part of democracy because without citizen participation there is no democracy. See definition of democracy above.
2. Equality - it is a principle that states the everyone is equal. Each and everyone has equal value, has equal opportunities, and must not be discriminated against due to their race, religion, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
3. Political Tolerance - it is a principle wherein majority rule but not at the expense of the minority. Minority rights are protected.
4. Accountability - elected and appointed officials are accountable to the people. They must perform their duties according to the will and wishes of the people for the benefit of the people.
5. Transparency - this is a principle wherein the government should let the people know what is happening in their country. The decisions made, the causes and reasons behind the decisions should be made public for the people's consumption.
6. Regular, Free and Fair Elections - every one that are qualified has the right to run for government office, they are elected by the people through free and fair elections.
7. Economic Freedom - government allows for private ownership of property and business, as well as the freedom to choose their own work and labor unions.
8. Control of the Abuse of Power - various methods are created to counter possible corruption within the government.
9. Bill of Rights - a list of all the rights and freedom that the people in a democratic government have. This bill was written to protect the people from abuse of government powers.
10. Accepting the results of Elections - because the election in a democratic government is regular, free and fair, its results should be accepted by all as final and enforceable.
11. Human Rights - democracy protects the rights of humans, their rights for life and dignity should be respected. Under the democratic government, emphasis on being valued as a human being is practiced.
12. Multi-Party System - democratic government must have at least two political parties, this is to avoid monopoly of one party over the people. If there is only  one political party in a country, it is a dictatorship not a democracy.
13. The Rule of Law - everybody is subject to the laws of the land regardless of position or influence in life. Everybody should follow the law and be held accountable if he or she violates it. Those who violate the laws subject to due process of law.
