When historians wanted to write about common people they
faced the problem of lack of any documentary evidence. They especially point to
the problem of understanding all events other than the ones related to kings,
queens, battles for kingdoms etc.
More than 70% of the population was illiterate and had no written history but their history was considered equally important and has gained a lot of significance but writing about those posed a serious challenge. So attempts were made to stir up memories of common people to unearth details about various events and incidents. Historians resorted to oral descriptions to narrate the lives of common folk.
